Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has been appointed to lead the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) high-level Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, as part of renewed efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The committee, inaugurated by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), is tasked with healing internal rifts, restoring party unity, and developing a forward-looking agenda for Nigeria's main opposition party following divisions that have persisted since the 2023 general elections.
In a tweet posted via his verified X account (@bukolasaraki) on Friday, Saraki revealed that he had concluded a strategic meeting in Enugu with Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, alongside committee members Senators Seriake Dickson and Ibrahim Dankwambo.
"We didn't sidestep the issues. We confronted the fractures in our foundation, asked the hard questions, and began shaping a real, workable plan to move our party forward," Saraki wrote, signaling a shift from rhetoric to action within the PDP's top ranks.
Saraki's selection to chair the committee underscores his reputation as a bridge-builder and experienced party leader with strong relationships across Nigeria's political spectrum. The committee is reportedly prioritizing dialogues with aggrieved stakeholders, state governors, former aspirants, and grassroots members.
Emphasizing his commitment to the party's revival, Saraki stated, "I believe in what the PDP has stood for—and what it can still become, if we're willing to do the hard, unglamorous work of rebuilding from the inside out." He acknowledged that while the task ahead would not be easy, the party possesses "the people, the clarity, and the commitment" needed to reemerge as a credible political force.
The Enugu consultation marks one of the committee's first major engagements, with more regional meetings expected in the coming weeks as the PDP intensifies efforts to reunite its ranks and reassert itself as a viable alternative in Nigeria's political landscape.
Political analysts view this reconciliation initiative as crucial for the PDP's chances in the upcoming 2027 general elections, as the party seeks to overcome internal challenges that have hampered its electoral performance in recent years.
