Real Madrid has reportedly rejected incoming manager Xabi Alonso's request to keep veteran midfielder Luka Modric at the club beyond this season, according to Spanish publication Diario AS.

The 39-year-old Croatian international is set to play his final LaLiga match for Los Blancos this Saturday against Real Sociedad, bringing an end to his illustrious 12-year stint with the Spanish giants.

Despite Alonso reportedly expressing his desire to retain Modric's services, the club's hierarchy has stood firm on their decision to part ways with the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner after the conclusion of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

Modric, who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, has enjoyed a trophy-laden career at the Santiago Bernabeu, accumulating an impressive 28 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four domestic league championships.

The midfield maestro's departure has already prompted tributes from both current and former Real Madrid players, highlighting his significant impact during his time at the club. His number 10 shirt will now be available for reassignment following his exit.

Despite leaving Real Madrid, Modric is expected to continue his international career with Croatia, with reports suggesting he aims to represent his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Xabi Alonso, who is set to take over managerial duties at Real Madrid, will now have to plan for the upcoming season without the experienced midfielder, despite his apparent preference to have kept Modric in the squad.
