Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has heavily criticized Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim for his tactical decisions during the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday, with Brennan Johnson's first-half goal proving decisive. The victory ended Spurs' 17-year trophy drought and secured them a place in next season's Champions League.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer described Manchester United's performance as "an embarrassment," particularly highlighting Amorim's desperate late-game tactics.

"It was a really poor game, the standard was poor, but Tottenham won't care about that," Shearer said. "Let me tell you something, Man United were an embarrassment tonight – and in the semi-final – they're chucking a 6ft 5 centre half up top in desperation and are lugging huge balls into the box."

The former England striker was referring to Amorim's decision to move defender Harry Maguire into a striker position during the closing stages of the match, as United struggled to create meaningful chances against Ange Postecoglou's side.

Manchester United's performance was notably poor throughout the match, with the team failing to mount a serious challenge for an equalizer despite the high stakes of the final.

The defeat marks another disappointing chapter in Manchester United's season, while Tottenham celebrate their first major trophy since winning the League Cup in 2008.
