The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the arrest of seven suspects allegedly involved in a notorious burglary syndicate operating in Ifa Atai Village and surrounding areas within Uyo metropolis.
According to a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation began on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at approximately 8:00 am when officers acted on credible intelligence to apprehend a key suspect.
The primary suspect, whose name was withheld, is reportedly a male resident of Ibiaku Ishiet Village in Uruan Local Government Area but originally from Esuk Mba Village in Bakassi LGA, Cross River State.
"During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in burgling houses in Ifa Atai Village and its environs, along with his gang members," DSP John stated.
The police spokesperson further revealed that the suspect admitted to being a member of the Mafia secret cult group and provided names of his fellow cult members, which led to additional investigations.
Following the initial arrest, police investigations led to the apprehension of six additional suspects believed to be receivers of stolen goods. A search of the suspects' apartments reportedly yielded several stolen items including generators, iron rods, eight solar batteries, and quantities of nails and binding wires.
DSP John emphasized that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects connected to the syndicate. She also reaffirmed the Akwa Ibom Police Command's commitment to its mandate of protecting lives and property across the state.
This arrest comes as part of intensified efforts by security agencies to combat rising cases of burglary and theft in residential areas across Akwa Ibom State.
