Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has moved quickly to clarify his identity following the arrest of his namesake in Ghana, which caused confusion among fans and social media users.
A viral video circulating on social media showed Ghanaian police arresting a 31-year-old suspect identified as Peter Okoye on charges of fraud and kidnapping. The similarity in names led some netizens to mistakenly believe that the famous singer was the one in custody.
Responding to the confusion, the Nigerian artist reposted the viral video on his X (formerly Twitter) account to set the record straight. In his characteristic pidgin English, he wrote: "Abeg make una dey specificaly dey specify which 'PETER OKOYE'. I no be thief."
The singer also urged Ghanaian police to be more specific when identifying suspects to prevent such misunderstandings that could potentially damage his reputation and brand.
Peter Okoye, who rose to fame as one half of the P-Square duo alongside his twin brother Paul, has maintained a successful solo career since the group's split. The incident highlights the challenges celebrities face with identity confusion in the digital age.
Ghanaian authorities have not issued any further statements regarding the arrested suspect, who reportedly has no connection to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
