Chelsea legend John Terry has publicly mocked Tottenham midfielder James Maddison after Spurs defeated Manchester United 1-0 to win the Europa League final on Wednesday, ending their 17-year trophy drought.

Tottenham secured their first major silverware since 2008 thanks to Brennan Johnson's first-half goal at Bilbao's San Mames Stadium. The victory represents a significant milestone for the North London club, which has faced years of criticism for failing to win trophies despite consistent top-flight performances.

Maddison, who missed the final due to injury, joined his teammates for the post-match celebrations wearing a Tottenham shirt. When questioned about changing into the team kit, the 28-year-old England international told TNT Sports: "They said I had to, to get the medal. I didn't want to do a John Terry when he went on with full kit [after Chelsea won the 2012 Champions League despite not playing in the final because of injury] and shin pads, but what a special feeling."

Terry, who famously celebrated Chelsea's 2012 Champions League triumph in full kit despite being suspended for the final, responded to Maddison's comments with a stinging rebuke on Instagram.

"I remember my first trophy. Ah bless them [laughing emoji] 16 to go," Terry wrote. "After that performance I think you [Maddison] have a chance. You just have to live for 900 years [laughing emoji]."

The former Chelsea captain's comments highlight the vast difference in trophy hauls between himself and Maddison. Terry won an impressive 17 trophies during his illustrious career at Stamford Bridge, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

For Tottenham, this Europa League victory under manager Ange Postecoglou marks a potential turning point for a club often criticized for falling short in crucial moments. The triumph could signal the beginning of a new era for Spurs as they look to build on this success in domestic competitions.

Manchester United's defeat, meanwhile, adds further pressure on their management as they conclude another season without silverware, raising questions about the future direction of the club under their current leadership.
