Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly backed manager Ruben Amorim as "the right person" to lead the club despite their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson's first-half goal proved decisive as Spurs claimed the Europa League trophy, leaving United trophyless this season and raising further questions about Amorim's future at Old Trafford.

Following the match, Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last November, suggested he would leave if the club's hierarchy decided to sack him amid United's poor run of results under his management.

However, Fernandes expressed strong support for his fellow Portuguese countryman in post-match comments to the media.

"It's not my decision, I think Ruben Amorim is the right person," Fernandes stated. "I know it is difficult to understand, but I still believe he is the right coach."

The midfielder acknowledged the challenging situation at the club but urged patience with the current management. "The club is in a situation where it is easy to have a new coach because the results have not been there. But I think he is the right man," he added.

This defeat marks another disappointing chapter in Manchester United's season, with Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou securing his first trophy with the North London club at United's expense.

The result has intensified scrutiny on United's board regarding Amorim's position, with the club now facing important decisions about their technical direction ahead of the 2025/26 season.
