Hundreds of protesters have flooded the streets of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, following the alleged killing of a 23-year-old university student by police officers.
Emmanuella Ahenjir, a final-year student of the Federal University, Wukari, was reportedly shot dead last Friday morning by unidentified police personnel at the Wurukum roundabout while riding in a vehicle from the Gyado Villa area of the town.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the state, with demonstrators, primarily youths, gathering at the scene of the shooting. The protest is being led by prominent gender rights activist, Ukan Kurugh.
Protesters were seen carrying placards with messages such as "End Police Brutality" and "Justice for Emmanuella" as they demanded immediate action from authorities and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young woman's death.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about police brutality in Nigeria, reminiscent of the nationwide #EndSARS protests that rocked the country in 2020.
As of the time of this report, the Benue State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident or the ongoing protests.
The killing has added to a list of recent security challenges in Benue State, which has also been dealing with communal clashes and other forms of violence in recent months.
BenriNews will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
