Tension has gripped Makurdi, the Benue State capital, as protesters, predominantly youths, have taken to the streets following the alleged killing of a 23-year-old final-year student by police officers.
Emmanuella Ahenjir, a final-year student of the Federal University, Wukari, was reportedly shot dead last Friday morning by unidentified police personnel at the Wurukum roundabout while riding in a vehicle coming from the Gyado Villa area of the town.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the state, with prominent gender rights activist Ukan Kurugh leading the demonstrations. Protesters gathered in large numbers at the Wurukum roundabout, the scene of the alleged killing, wielding placards with inscriptions such as "End Police Brutality" and "Justice for Emmanuella."
The demonstrators are demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ahenjir's death and immediate action from relevant authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This incident comes amid growing concerns over police brutality in Nigeria, reminiscent of the nationwide #EndSARS protests that rocked the country in 2020. The killing has reignited conversations about police reform and accountability in the country's law enforcement agencies.
As of the time of this report, the Benue State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident or the ongoing protests.
The situation remains tense in Makurdi as protesters vow to continue their demonstrations until justice is served for Emmanuella Ahenjir.
