Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old final-year student of Federal University Wukari who was allegedly killed by police gunfire, has been laid to rest in her hometown in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Ahenjir was reportedly shot on May 16, 2025, during a police stop-and-search operation near the Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi. According to eyewitness accounts, police officers opened fire on the vehicle she was traveling in after the driver allegedly failed to immediately comply with their stop signal.
The bullet struck Emmanuella, who later succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital despite medical intervention.
Her death has sparked significant outrage across Benue State and beyond, with peaceful protests erupting in Makurdi. Civil society groups and concerned residents marched through the streets demanding justice for the slain student and calling for an end to police brutality.
