The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has declared support for the newly passed law establishing rotational chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas, describing it as "in the right direction."

CCII President-General, Chief Sulaimon Ajeniyi Ajewole, made this declaration on Wednesday during a press conference held at Ibadan House, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.

The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Oyo State Chieftaincy Law (Further Amendment) 2025, which reforms the leadership structure of the state's traditional council. Under the previous Oyo State Chieftaincy Law 2000, the Alaafin of Oyo held the position of permanent Chairman of the council.

The new amendment provides for chairmanship rotation among three prominent traditional rulers: the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Soun of Ogbomoso.

"The bill which has been passed into law is in line with justice, equity and fairness. The Oyo State House of Assembly did the right thing," Ajewole stated during the press conference.

The CCII President-General expressed gratitude to the state legislature for their action, noting that the amendment was made "in the interest of peace, justice and fairness."

"Peace in inequality is chaos postponed but peace in tranquility is peace forever," Ajewole remarked, adding appreciation for Governor Seyi Makinde "for allowing the State House of Assembly to do their job."

The new rotational system represents a significant shift in the traditional leadership structure in Oyo State, potentially fostering greater inclusivity among the state's major traditional institutions.
