An Ikeja Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the remand of two suspects, Olaitan Fasasi, 40, and Kehinde Tobiloba, 26, in a correctional facility over allegations of attempted murder and membership of a secret cult society.
The defendants, whose addresses were not provided in court, are facing charges of conspiracy, attempted murder, and membership of a secret society.
Magistrate L.A. Owolabi did not take the plea of the defendants, citing lack of jurisdiction. He directed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and adjourned the case until May 31, 2025, for mention.
According to the prosecutor, Josephine Ikhayere, the defendants allegedly committed the offences around 5:00 pm on February 15, 2025, at Mushin, Lagos. Fasasi, Tobiloba, and others now at large, reportedly attempted to murder a resident, Alfred Ademola, by shooting at him with a locally made gun.
Ikhayere further told the court that the defendants are members of the Eiye Confraternity, a group proscribed by law in Lagos State.
The prosecutor stated that the alleged offences contravene Sections 230(1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2012, as well as Section 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d) of the Unlawful Societies and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about cult-related violence in Lagos, with authorities continuing to crack down on activities of proscribed groups across the state.
