The Kebbi State Police Command has successfully apprehended two suspected car thieves following a dramatic pursuit along the Shanga/Dugu road in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command's spokesperson, CSP Nafi'u Abubakar, the suspects were intercepted on May 19, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. during a routine patrol conducted by a combined team of police officers and vigilantes.
The suspects, identified as Umar Yusuf and Dalhatu Aminu, both residents of Birnin Kebbi town, were driving an unregistered ash-colored Peugeot 206 vehicle that was suspected to be stolen.
"When questioned, the suspects zoomed off. As a result, they were pursued and arrested," CSP Abubakar stated.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to having deceived the vehicle owner in Birnin Kebbi by pretending to be potential buyers. While testing the vehicle, they absconded with it.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, Bello Sani, commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the security personnel involved in the operation. He also reiterated the Command's commitment to ridding Kebbi State of all forms of criminal activities.
CP Sani urged his officers to remain vigilant while on duty and advised motor vehicle dealers to be cautious of customers with dubious intentions during business transactions.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Birnin Kebbi for further investigation. Authorities aim to uncover the suspects' modus operandi and apprehend any remaining gang members for prosecution.
