Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described sports as a unique activity that transcends politics, breaks language barriers, and builds lasting relationships among people.

Obasanjo made these remarks in an address welcoming delegates from Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday.

In his address titled "A TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT," the former president encouraged participants to embrace camaraderie, build lasting relationships, and enjoy the celebration of pluralism and peace that the games represent.

"As we gather in Abeokuta for the 22nd National Sports Festival, let us reflect on the essence of these Games," Obasanjo stated. "Since their inception in Lagos in 1973, the festival has been more than a competition. It has served as a beacon of unity, rebuilding the bonds of peace and mutual respect after the Civil War."

The elder statesman emphasized that the true spirit of the Games extends beyond medals or state rankings, noting that it is found in courage, perseverance, and the joy of participation. He added that the thrill of competition is not about the scoreboard but about embracing the love of sport itself.

"In sports, we find a unique connection that transcends politics and language barriers. Now, as we gather here, I encourage you to embrace the camaraderie, build lasting relationships, and enjoy this celebration of pluralism and peace," he said.

Obasanjo concluded his address with a blessing for the Games: "May these Games bring joy, unity, and the triumph of the human spirit," as he welcomed the participating athletes to Ogun State.

The National Sports Festival continues to serve as Nigeria's premier sporting event, bringing together athletes from across the country to compete in various sporting disciplines while fostering national unity and identifying talents for international competitions.
