Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has filed formal petitions against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and one Dr. Sandra Duru with both the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.
The petitions, dated May 15, 2025, allege criminal conspiracy, defamation, cyber-related offenses, and an alleged attempt on her life. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's legal representative, Senator Ehiogie West-Idahosa, filed the complaints on her behalf.
According to the petition, Akpabio and Duru are accused of orchestrating a malicious campaign against the Kogi Central Senator. The allegations suggest this campaign involved defamation, cyber-stalking, and even attempted assassination.
"The allegations against me are false and part of a conspiracy to undermine my work and reputation," Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated. "I fear for my safety and that of my family due to the harassment and intimidation."
The petition claims that Duru, allegedly posing as "Prof. Mgbeke," initially presented herself as a supporter before demanding payment for "framing narratives" and rallying digital support. When Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan declined, Duru reportedly launched a character assassination campaign against her.
The suspended Senator's legal team stated: "We believe the evidence will show a deliberate campaign to malign and endanger our client through false accusations."
The petition further alleges that Senator Akpabio had a motive to retaliate against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan after she publicly accused him of sexual harassment in February 2025.
In her submission through counsel West-Idahosa, Natasha claimed the petition is supported by "incontrovertible evidence from public broadcasts, witness testimonies, media reports, and expert analyses." She urged the authorities to examine statements and actions of third-party collaborators who publicly endorsed the allegedly defamatory broadcast against her.
"We maintain that the actions against our client amount to a criminal enterprise violating multiple laws. We respectfully urge your service to painstakingly investigate the contents of this Petition and ensure that justice is expeditiously dispensed to all who may be found wanting regardless of their status in the Nigerian society," the petition concluded.
This development comes amid ongoing tension between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership. The court is expected to deliver judgment on Natasha's suit against the Senate and Akpabio regarding her suspension on June 27, 2025.
