One person was injured on Sunday following a violent clash between commercial tricycle operators (keke riders) and a group of youths at Evans Square in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealing that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the altercation that occurred around 12:30 p.m. on May 17, 2025.
"Officers of the Adekunle Division received a distress call reporting a clash between some commercial tricycle riders and youths at Evans Square, Ebute Metta," Hundeyin stated. "Police Patrol Teams, Tactical Squads, and other police detachments responded swiftly to the distress call and were able to promptly restore normalcy."
According to the police statement, the injured individual was rescued and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and recovering well. The Command emphasized that no life was lost in the incident.
The three suspects arrested at the scene are currently detained in police custody and will be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation. The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has been directed to take over the investigation to ensure all responsible parties are brought to justice.
The police have clarified that the incident was not linked to any ethnic dispute or communal tensions in the state. "There is no indication of ethnic conflict or tension in any part of the state. The incident posed no threat to the overall peace and security of Lagos," the statement read.
The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its constitutional mandate to protect lives and property, assuring residents of its readiness to maintain stability and public order. Parents and guardians have been advised to caution their children and wards against participating in activities that could disturb public peace.
Residents are encouraged to continue with their daily activities without fear of intimidation or harassment as the police maintain vigilance across the state.
