The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed strong confidence in securing victory in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12, provided the exercise is conducted in a free and credible manner.
In an interview with journalists on Sunday, the Deputy Chairman of the party in Lagos, Mr. Olusupo Ajayi, stated that the LP is strategically positioned to win at the grassroots level across the state.
"Recall that we had the highest number of votes in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election," Ajayi noted. "The people of Lagos still resonate with the vision and message of the Labour Party."
According to the timetable released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), the elections will be held across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state.
The party recently concluded its delegate-based primaries in 26 councils, which Ajayi described as peaceful and transparent. Following this process, 26 chairmanship candidates emerged on Friday to contest the polls.
Emphasizing that the upcoming election is a grassroots contest, Ajayi affirmed that the LP is committed to delivering transformative governance and meaningful development at the local level, despite going up against the incumbent ruling party.
"We are now focused on running a vigorous and well-structured campaign," he said, adding that the party would strictly operate within legal frameworks to mobilize voters and build strong connections with local communities across the state.
If successful at the polls, Ajayi revealed that the LP would prioritize community-focused governance and sustained public engagement. He noted that the party's participation in the elections is part of a broader effort to return power to the grassroots and restore public confidence in democratic institutions.
The Deputy Chairman also called on the Chairperson of LASIEC, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
"In the end, we will all return to dust. What we leave behind is goodwill for our children and future generations," he stated. "I hope she maintains her integrity so her legacy and goodwill can endure for generations to come."
