Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has strongly reacted to controversial claims made by influencer Scott Iguma that Lagos is a "smelling city" filled with "big mosquitoes."

The controversy began when Iguma's podcast interview went viral, in which he made unflattering remarks about Nigeria's commercial capital. "Lagos is smelling...There are a lot of big mosquitoes in Lagos," Iguma stated in the widely circulated clip.

Responding via his X (formerly Twitter) account, Commissioner Wahab expressed concern over what he described as "deliberate efforts by a handful of individuals to tarnish the reputation of Lagos State."

"It is regrettable that some who relocate from their home states in pursuit of better opportunities quickly, in less than a month or two, resort to disparaging the very state that has provided them with the platform to thrive," Wahab wrote.

The commissioner further alleged that certain individuals with significant social media followings are propagating harmful narratives that undermine Lagos State's progress and inclusive nature, often aligning with what he termed "divisive agendas."

While acknowledging that constructive criticism is essential for growth, Wahab condemned what he characterized as "malicious attempts to vilify a state that empowers countless lives daily," describing such actions as counterproductive.

"Lagos remains a place of opportunity, innovation, and resilience, and it is imperative that we collectively uphold its integrity while fostering unity and progress," the commissioner emphasized.

In a direct address to the influencer, Wahab concluded his statement with: "Dear @IgumaScott I do hope that you will put this same energy in 'looking out' for other states. I wish you all the best!"

This exchange highlights ongoing tensions between government officials and social media personalities regarding public commentary on Lagos State's environmental conditions and livability.
