The Yobe State Hisbah Commission has conducted a major operation resulting in the seizure of 209 cartons of alcohol and the closure of a brothel in Damaturu, the state capital.
Dr. Yahuza Abubakar, Chairman of the Hisbah Commission, revealed during a press briefing that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to Abubakar, the joint task force intercepted a Golf vehicle with license plate ABJ-144-SC loaded with the confiscated alcohol at Maina Lodge. A subsequent search of the lodge's VIP Room 07 uncovered an additional 34 bottles of alcohol.
"The lodge has been temporarily closed pending the conclusion of investigations to identify the driver and individuals responsible for smuggling the contraband into the state," the Hisbah Chairman stated.
In a related operation, the Commission, with support from NSCDC and the Yobe State Road Traffic Agency (YOROTA), conducted a raid in Garin Alkali community where they seized an additional 34 bottles of alcohol.
The Commission also responded to a distress call from the Waziri Ibrahim community, which led to the closure of a residential building allegedly being used for prostitution. "The property has been shut for three months pending further investigation," Abubakar added.
The Chairman emphasized that these operations highlight the Commission's commitment to upholding moral standards and combating illicit activities in Yobe State. He confirmed that investigations into all incidents are ongoing.
The Hisbah Commission, which operates under Islamic law principles, has been increasingly active in northern Nigerian states, focusing on enforcing moral codes and religious practices.
