A 19-year-old Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidate, Opesusi Faith Timilehin, has committed suicide in Lagos State after reportedly scoring 190 in the recently released Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Monday when Timilehin consumed 'Push Out' rat poison at her residence in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Sources revealed that Timilehin, who was living with her elder sister, had previously sat for the same examination in 2024 and had achieved a better result than this year's score.
An eyewitness account stated that the deceased had visited her sister's office requesting palm oil to ease the pain she was experiencing after consuming the poison at home.
"Her sister, who was initially unaware of the cause of the pain, ignored her request but later raised an alarm after Timilehin confessed on the way to the hospital that she had taken poison at home," the source explained.
In a tragic twist, it was discovered that Timilehin had actually received an admission offer via her Gmail account. This notification reportedly arrived immediately after she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital, Odogunyan.
The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is a computer-based standardized test introduced by JAMB in 1978 for prospective undergraduates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
This incident comes amid ongoing discussions about examination pressure and mental health challenges faced by Nigerian students, particularly during the highly competitive UTME season.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident as investigations continue.
