Three opposition members of the House of Representatives have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as announced during Thursday's plenary session.
The defectors include Oluwole Oke from Osun State, formerly of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and two lawmakers from Kano State – Kabiru Hassan Rumrum and Sani Abdullahi – both previously elected under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen formally announced the defections during the House session. Prior to the official announcement, Rumrum had already declared his resignation from the NNPP and return to the APC during a meeting with the party's National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Similarly, Oke had earlier announced his resignation from the PDP in Osun State and his intention to join the ruling party.
This latest round of defections brings the total number of lawmakers who have switched parties since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly to 30. Of these, 27 have joined the ruling APC from various opposition parties including the PDP, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the NNPP.
The trend of defections to the ruling party continues to reshape the political landscape in the National Assembly, potentially strengthening the APC's position ahead of future legislative decisions and the 2027 general elections.
