Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for the immediate resignation of Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), following the controversy surrounding the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.
The demand comes after JAMB admitted on Wednesday that there were technical errors in the examination process, which led to mass failures reported across the country. The admission followed widespread public outrage over the results.
During a public address, Prof. Oloyede apologized to affected candidates and reportedly broke down in tears. However, Sowore dismissed this emotional display as insufficient.
"The Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Oloyede bears responsibility for the organization's egregious errors, which have devastatingly claimed a young life. Shedding crocodile tears is not a remedy for these infractions," Sowore stated.
The activist further called for a thorough investigation of the examination body and suggested possible prosecution for manslaughter. He also advocated for the complete scrapping of JAMB as an institution.
"As a first step, he should resign, followed by a thorough investigation and possible prosecution for manslaughter. Moreover, JAMB must be scrapped," he added.
The controversy has sparked wider debate about the effectiveness of Nigeria's examination systems and the psychological impact of such errors on students. The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has also criticized JAMB, calling for accountability and reform of the examination body.
JAMB has yet to respond to Sowore's specific demands for the Registrar's resignation. The board is currently addressing complaints from affected candidates as part of its remedial measures.
