A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) known as the PDP Reformation Agenda has declared the South-East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) meeting held in Enugu State on Wednesday as illegal and unconstitutional.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the group alleged that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah convened the meeting in violation of the party's constitution, raising concerns about the legitimacy of proceedings and decisions taken.

The group's Director General, Mazi O. Chukwuebuka, cited Article 27(3) of the PDP Constitution, which stipulates that only the National Vice Chairman of a zone is authorized to convene a Zonal Executive Committee meeting.

"Chief Odefa, who reportedly convened the meeting, was expelled from the PDP in November 2024, a decision subsequently upheld by the Federal High Court in Abakaliki," the statement read. "Following his expulsion, both the National Legal Adviser and the Southeast Zonal Legal Adviser of the PDP issued a formal opinion confirming that Odefa is no longer a member of the party."

The reform group further alleged that the controversial meeting was disguised as an inauguration of members of a "Mobilization Committee" and was scheduled to take place at the Banquet Hall of the Old Government Lodge in Enugu.

More concerning to the group are allegations that Governor Mbah may be planning to defect from the PDP "after a failed attempt to unseat Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu as the party's National Secretary."

"The ultimate goal of this maneuver is to coerce the PDP National Executive Committee and the recently constituted reform committee led by former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, into reversing the Supreme Court-backed recognition of Senator Anyanwu," the statement alleged.

The PDP Reformation Agenda cautioned party leaders and members against participating in what it described as an unconstitutional gathering, urging Governor Mbah to "prioritize the party's interests and his political future by acting in accordance with its principles, and desist from this path of infamy."

The group expressed full confidence in the ongoing reform process being overseen by Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Dr. Saraki, who chairs the Reformation Committee. This committee is expected to guide the party toward a National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for May 27 and a National Convention in August 2025.

This development adds to the growing internal conflicts within Nigeria's main opposition party as it prepares for crucial organizational meetings in the coming months.
