Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has appealed to Nigerians to preserve their cultural heritage and prevent it from extinction. The governor made this call on Thursday during the grand finale of the 2025 World Egungun Festival held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.

Represented by his Deputy, Barrister Adebayo Lawal, Makinde emphasized the importance of cultural preservation, noting his satisfaction with the diverse age groups in attendance at the event.

"We must not allow our culture to go into extinction and I am happy, because it is not only the old people that are here today," the governor stated.

Makinde reiterated his administration's commitment to expanding cultural initiatives, explaining that such efforts would help generate more revenue from cultural tourism and boost the state's economy. He highlighted that culture and tourism have been prioritized under his leadership.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, who was represented by the Maye Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi. Other notable attendees included the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Osun State, Hon. Ojo Abiodun, the President of Oje Parapo Worldwide, Prince Adeola Adelakun, and Oyo State's Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun.

The World Egungun Festival serves as a platform to showcase and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people, particularly the masquerade tradition which holds significant cultural and spiritual importance in Yorubaland.
