The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party has announced that its chairmanship primaries will take place on Friday across all council areas in preparation for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12.
Pastor Dayo Ekong, the State Chairman of the party, confirmed this development during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday. According to Ekong, the party will employ an indirect system for the primaries, with selected delegates electing the party's candidates.
"Our councillorship primaries will hold today (Thursday) across all the wards, while the chairmanship primaries will be held on Friday in all the local government areas," Ekong stated.
The chairman emphasized the party's commitment to conducting transparent elections, adding, "We are committed to free, fair and transparent primary elections. We are confident of a good outing in the election."
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) is preparing to conduct elections across the state's 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas on July 12, 2025.
This announcement comes as political parties in Lagos State intensify preparations for the local government polls, which will determine who leads the grassroots governance structures across Nigeria's commercial capital for the next term.
