The Katsina State House of Assembly has officially acknowledged receiving a proposal for the creation of new emirates within the state, following an earlier denial that had caused confusion among residents and stakeholders.
According to a statement made on Tuesday by Aminu Magaji Idris, the spokesperson for the Speaker of the House, the proposal document has indeed been submitted to the Assembly and is currently on the Speaker's desk for consideration.
Idris explained that his previous denial during an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday was due to his lack of awareness at the time, as he had already left the office before the document was submitted.
"This issue is not unusual," Idris clarified in a statement to Katsina Times. "Individuals, groups, or communities can submit petitions, requests, or proposals to the Assembly, and the Assembly has the mandate to deliberate on such matters and make decisions accordingly."
Multiple sources within the Assembly have corroborated that the document was indeed submitted and awaits official processing. The proposal reportedly advocates for the establishment of additional emirates under the existing Katsina Emirate structure.
Despite the confirmation of the proposal's receipt, Tuesday's plenary session concluded without any mention of the document. It remains unclear when the proposal will be formally presented for deliberation by the lawmakers.
The creation of new emirates has been a sensitive political issue in northern Nigeria in recent years, with similar restructuring having occurred in neighboring states like Kano, often generating significant debate about traditional institutions and governance structures.
As this development unfolds, residents of Katsina State await further information on how the Assembly will proceed with the consideration of this potentially significant administrative reorganization.
