The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has broken its silence on the viral video showing Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, allegedly involved in naira abuse during his birthday celebration.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the anti-graft agency declared: "Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!"
The controversy erupted after a video clip from Tompolo's 54th birthday celebration in April went viral on social media. The footage, shared by a user identified as Harrison A (@harreceipts) on X, showed the Niger Delta chieftain dancing while another man lavishly sprayed N1,000 notes on him.
The video sparked outrage among Nigerians who challenged the EFCC to arrest Tompolo as they have done with other individuals accused of similar offenses. Many social media users questioned whether the anti-corruption agency would apply the same standards to the influential figure as it has to ordinary citizens.
The EFCC has previously arrested and prosecuted several individuals, including celebrities, for naira abuse under the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits the spraying of naira notes at social events.
Tompolo, a former militant leader who later accepted the federal government's amnesty program, has remained a powerful figure in the Niger Delta region. This latest controversy adds to his complex public profile.
The EFCC's statement suggests that the agency intends to investigate the matter further, though no specific timeline for questioning or potential charges has been announced.
This development comes amid ongoing debates about the consistent application of laws against naira abuse across different segments of Nigerian society.
