Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared that President Bola Tinubu's second-term bid in the 2027 presidential election is "non-negotiable," calling on traditional rulers from the South-South region to rally behind the President.
Speaking during a visit by the South-South Monarchs' Forum at the Government House in Benin, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the importance of the region's unified support for President Tinubu's re-election campaign.
"The South-South zone should speak with one voice, because we have our son as the President, and we all must speak with one voice to return him in 2027 to complete his tenure," Okpebholo stated.
The governor praised Tinubu's economic policies, claiming they have significantly benefited Nigerian states through increased allocations that enable more developmental projects. He highlighted the President's efforts to block financial leakages and ensure proper resource utilization.
"President Tinubu has done so much for this country, and there are bold steps and decisions he has taken to put the nation on the path of development and growth," he added.
Okpebholo also underscored the crucial role of traditional institutions in national development, particularly in addressing security challenges across the country. He called on the monarchs to support the President's ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity.
"The development of our nation cannot be achieved without the active support of our royal fathers," the governor remarked.
While President Tinubu has not officially declared his intention to run for a second term, Governor Okpebholo's endorsement signals early political positioning ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
