A cholera outbreak has struck several communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of four people and hospitalization of several others.

The affected areas include Hurti community, Bokkos West, Bokkos Central, and Mangol, according to a statement released on Monday by the Executive Chairman of Bokkos LGA, Mr. Amalau Amalau.

"So far, we have lost four people. Some others are receiving treatment, and a few have already been discharged," Amalau confirmed in the statement.

Health authorities, including the Primary Health Care Department and local cottage hospitals, are currently collaborating to contain the spread and provide treatment to those infected.

Preventive Measures Urged

The LGA chairman has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow strict hygiene guidelines to prevent further infections.

"We call on the people of Bokkos to maintain cleanliness, wash hands regularly, properly clean fruits and vegetables, and drink safe water," he emphasized.

Residents are also encouraged to report any suspected symptoms immediately to the nearest health facility to ensure prompt medical attention.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, can spread rapidly in areas with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and insufficient hygiene practices.

Efforts are ongoing to monitor the situation closely and prevent additional casualties as health officials work to bring the outbreak under control.
