The Edo State Government has announced the cancellation of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025. The decision was communicated through a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, on Monday.
According to the statement, the cancellation aims to accommodate the nationwide immunization campaign that coincides with the sanitation program. This adjustment will allow health officers and immunization workers unrestricted movement throughout the state during the campaign period.
Despite the suspension of the formal exercise, the government has encouraged all residents to maintain cleanliness in their immediate environments.
Diphtheria Outbreak Concerns
BenriNews has gathered that the cancellation is likely connected to the recent outbreak of diphtheria disease and dengue fever in the state. A few weeks ago, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed the outbreak, revealing alarming statistics about the situation.
Out of 15 suspected cases of diphtheria, six have been confirmed positive, with three deaths already recorded. This concerning development has prompted health authorities to prioritize immunization efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. It can lead to breathing problems, heart failure, paralysis, and even death if left untreated. The disease is preventable through vaccination, which explains the government's focus on the immunization campaign.
Public health experts recommend that residents watch for symptoms including sore throat, fever, swollen glands in the neck, and a thick, gray coating in the throat or nose. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
The state government is expected to release more details about the immunization campaign in the coming days, including vaccination centers and target populations.
