The Borno State Government has arrested 73 underage children for their alleged involvement in substance abuse in a decisive move to address the growing menace of drug abuse among minors in the state.
The children, mostly between the ages of 12 and 15, were apprehended from various locations in Maiduguri, including Bulabulin Kasuwa and Gwange Kasan Gada. According to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, which spearheaded the operation, many of these minors were not only abusing substances but were also exposed to criminal activities.
The crackdown was reportedly triggered by a disturbing video circulating on social media that showed a young boy openly admitting to drug abuse. This prompted immediate action from state authorities to address the situation.
Rehabilitation Efforts Underway
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, confirmed that the arrested children have been transferred to the Bulumkuttu Rehabilitation Centre in Maiduguri. There, they will undergo comprehensive rehabilitation, counselling, and reintegration programs under the supervision of the Borno State Government.
While addressing the children before their relocation, Commissioner Gambo expressed deep concern over the rising trend of drug use among minors in the state.
"You are still very young, and you deserve a better life than this. We are not here to punish you, but to support you. The Borno State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, is committed to giving you another chance to live a meaningful and responsible life," she stated.
Broader Strategy to Combat Drug Abuse
The commissioner further revealed that the ministry would continue its efforts to trace, rescue, and rehabilitate more at-risk children across the state. The initiative involves collaboration with security agencies, traditional leaders, community members, and non-governmental organizations to address the root causes of drug abuse and child endangerment.
This development comes amid growing concerns about substance abuse among young people in Nigeria, particularly in regions affected by insecurity and socioeconomic challenges. The Borno State Government's intervention represents a significant step toward safeguarding the future of vulnerable children in the state.
Authorities have emphasized that the focus of this operation is rehabilitation rather than punishment, with the ultimate goal of reintegrating these children into society as responsible citizens.
