The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, Ormin Torsar Victor, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in response to escalating security challenges in the region.

According to an official statement released on Sunday, the curfew restricts all movement into and out of the local government area after 6:30 PM daily. The directive takes immediate effect as authorities attempt to curb the recent wave of violence.

"With this Executive directive, people coming into Gwer West LGA and those going out to other places are to do so within the stipulated time of 6:30 PM," the chairman stated, emphasizing that the measure is temporary and subject to review based on improvements in the security situation.

Deadly Attacks Trigger Security Measures

The curfew follows a series of deadly attacks that occurred on Friday, May 9, 2025, in the neighboring communities of Ayilamo and Jato-Acka. At least nine people were killed when suspected herdsmen launched coordinated assaults on both villages.

In Jato-Acka, over 20 armed attackers invaded the area, killing six residents and burning numerous homes. The violence subsequently spread to Ayilamo, where three more people, including a Livestock Guard, were reportedly murdered.

These incidents represent the latest chapter in the ongoing security challenges facing Benue State, where clashes between farming communities and herders have resulted in significant loss of life and property over the years.

Local authorities are urging residents to comply with the curfew regulations and report any suspicious activities to security agencies as efforts continue to restore peace and stability to the affected areas.
