The management of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State has expelled over 58 students for involvement in cult-related activities between 2022 and now, according to the institution's Rector, Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Dr. Umar emphasized the institution's firm stance against cultism, stating that the polytechnic maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward such activities.

"Cultism is a problem especially in this part of the country and no one can pretend to be ignorant of the menace of cultism," the Rector said. "So far we have expelled over 58 students with cult-related issues between 2022 till date and we are still doing it and not relenting."

Dr. Umar noted that these expulsions have significantly reduced the magnitude of cult-related activities within the institution. Upon assuming office as Rector, he offered students an opportunity to renounce their membership in secret cults without consequences, while warning that those caught afterward would face strict disciplinary action.

This initiative reportedly led many students to abandon their cult affiliations. The Rector further revealed that staff members, including himself and the management team, had sworn affidavits declaring non-membership in cult groups.

"This can be attested to if you check the numbers of students expelled between 2022 till date," he explained. "The institution has zero tolerance to cultism. Anybody who is caught in cult-related activities will be shown the way out – whether staff or students."

The strict measures highlight growing concerns about cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions and the efforts being made by educational authorities to combat this issue and ensure safer learning environments.
