The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for conducting a political meeting in Zamfara State shortly after deadly bandit attacks claimed numerous lives in the region.
According to recent reports, armed bandits have continued their reign of terror across multiple local government areas in Zamfara, with the latest attacks resulting in 24 deaths, 16 injuries, and the abduction of 144 residents.
Despite the grim security situation, PDP governors proceeded with their scheduled meeting in the state on Saturday, August 23, 2025, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties.
In a statement released on Sunday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the governors' gathering as insensitive and disrespectful to victims of the ongoing violence.
"Holding a political meeting in Zamfara at this critical time demonstrates a shocking disregard for the suffering of innocent citizens who continue to face deadly attacks," the statement read in part.
The criticism comes amid escalating security challenges in northwestern Nigeria, where banditry and kidnapping have become increasingly prevalent despite government efforts to contain the situation.
This incident marks the latest in a series of political confrontations between Nigeria's major parties as they position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
The ADC had previously called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara and neighboring Katsina State due to the persistent security challenges affecting the region.
Meanwhile, the PDP governors have yet to respond to the criticism regarding their decision to proceed with the meeting despite the security situation.
