The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major-General Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd), has passed away at the age of 81 following an illness. The royal father died on Saturday night while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in London, United Kingdom.
Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the monarch's death in an official statement released on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.
According to the statement, the late Emir is survived by four wives and seven children. The family has indicated that details regarding burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
Major-General Sani Sami (rtd) was a prominent traditional ruler in northwestern Nigeria who combined his military background with traditional leadership. Before ascending to the throne, he had a distinguished career in the Nigerian military, rising to the rank of Major-General before his retirement.
The Zuru Emirate, located in the southern part of Kebbi State, is one of the significant traditional institutions in the region with historical and cultural importance to the people of the area.
His death comes at a time when traditional institutions continue to play vital roles in community cohesion, cultural preservation, and local governance in Nigeria.
