The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of one of Nigeria's longest-reigning traditional monarchies.
According to reports, the revered monarch died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after serving his people for over six decades.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was installed as the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom on April 2, 1960, making his reign span an impressive 64 years. He belonged to the House of Anikinaiya and was widely respected across Nigeria for his leadership and cultural stewardship.
His death comes in a period of national mourning, occurring just hours after the announcement of former President Muhammadu Buhari's passing in London. Sources indicate that the late Awujale and the former president shared a long-standing friendship.
Throughout his reign, Oba Adetona witnessed Nigeria's independence, military regimes, return to democracy, and numerous socio-political transformations while maintaining the cultural heritage and traditions of the Ijebu people.
The monarch's passing represents a significant loss to Nigeria's traditional institution, particularly in the Southwest region where he was considered one of the most influential traditional rulers.
As of the time of this report, the Ijebu traditional council has not released official funeral arrangements, though traditional rites are expected to commence soon in accordance with Yoruba customs.
