President Bola Tinubu on Thursday received the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja for high-level discussions on trade matters.

The closed-door meeting between the Nigerian President and the WTO chief focused on trade issues of national, continental, and global significance, according to sources familiar with the engagement.

This strategic meeting comes just two weeks before the conclusion of Okonjo-Iweala's first term as WTO Director-General on August 31, 2025. She is set to begin her second term on September 1, 2025, continuing her historic leadership of the global trade body.

Okonjo-Iweala made history in 2021 when she became both the first African and the first woman to lead the WTO, which comprises 164 member nations. Her groundbreaking appointment and subsequent reelection represent significant milestones for Nigeria and Africa on the global economic stage.

President Tinubu has previously expressed confidence that Okonjo-Iweala's continued leadership would strengthen the WTO's role as a critical pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance over the next four years.

The meeting underscores Nigeria's engagement with international economic institutions and highlights the country's growing influence in global trade discussions through one of its most accomplished public servants.

Recently, Okonjo-Iweala had raised concerns about Nigeria's low internet penetration, describing it as detrimental to the country's participation in the digital trade market. This issue may have featured in their discussions as Nigeria seeks to improve its position in global trade.
