Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion.
According to reliable sources, Tambuwal is currently being interrogated at the EFCC headquarters in connection with the alleged financial impropriety that occurred during his tenure as governor.
The high-profile detention comes amid accusations from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that the anti-graft agency is conducting selective investigations targeting opposition politicians.
In a statement issued by ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party claimed that recent EFCC summons to senior members of the opposition coalition were politically motivated and directly linked to their political affiliations.
"Some of the cases being pursued are not based on new evidence but involve reopening files from past years," the ADC alleged in their statement, suggesting that the anti-corruption agency was being used as a political tool.
The party further accused the EFCC of acting as a "political hit squad" for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that the investigations were designed to intimidate opposition figures.
Tambuwal, who previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives before becoming Sokoto State Governor, is a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. His detention represents one of the most significant anti-corruption moves against a serving senator in recent times.
The EFCC has yet to release an official statement regarding the specific details of the allegations against Tambuwal or how long he will remain in custody.
This development is part of a broader pattern of anti-corruption investigations that have targeted several former governors and high-ranking officials in Nigeria, raising questions about accountability in public office and the timing of such investigations.
