The Edo State Special Security Squad (ESSS) has issued a stern warning after uncovering plans by suspected cultists to instigate violence during the upcoming senatorial and House of Representatives by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025, in the state.
Ameloemen Noah, Coordinator of the ESSS, revealed this information on Friday during a comprehensive security operation across Edo Central and Edo North senatorial districts. The operation specifically targeted cult networks with the aim of dismantling their structures and apprehending their leaders.
"We have credible intelligence that certain cult groups are mobilising to trigger unrest before, during, and after the polls," Noah stated. "Let it be clear: our response will be swift and uncompromising. This is not a political issue, it is about protecting the people of Edo State."
The security coordinator emphasized that all security agencies in the state would be fully mobilized to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections. He also issued a direct appeal to parents and guardians to caution their children against being used as instruments by criminal elements.
"Anyone apprehended will face the full weight of the law," Noah warned, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
The security sweep in Edo Central covered strategic locations including the Ojuromi Modern Market in Uromi, as well as Ekpoma, Irrua, and surrounding communities. In Edo North, operatives conducted thorough checks in Warake, Iyeki Road, Angle 90, and the Auchi Polytechnic campus.
This development comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly disqualified the Labour Party and several other political parties from participating in the by-elections, while approving nine political parties to contest.
The ESSS has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the electoral process, emphasizing that no group would be permitted to intimidate voters or compromise public order during this critical democratic exercise.
