A human rights organization, De-Advocates for Justice Today, has issued a strong appeal to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore was detained by the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of criminal defamation and forgery, sparking concerns about the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the group's President, Comrade Israel Joe, De-Advocates criticized the police for what they described as a violation of fundamental principles of justice.
"It is important to draw the attention of the police who have deviated clearly from the twin principles of justice 'Nemo Judex in causa sua'. You cannot be the judge on your own matter as being done by the police in this case," the statement read.
The rights group further alleged that Sowore's detention might be connected to his consistent criticism of police activities, suggesting that his activism "earned him a permanent hatred within the ranks of the police."
In a clear warning to authorities, the organization threatened to mobilize for "massive action" if their demands are not met. "We shall not hesitate to converge at the Nigeria Police Force for a massive action in solidarity with SoworeNow," the statement emphasized.
This development comes amid growing tension, as Sowore had earlier honored a police summons, reportedly arriving at Force Headquarters with personal items including a travel bag, toothpaste, and soap, suggesting he anticipated possible detention.
Sowore, a presidential candidate in the 2023 elections and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has remained a prominent voice in Nigerian activism, consistently challenging government policies and alleged institutional misconduct.
