Tragedy struck in Jigawa State on Monday when a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), SC Bashir Adamu Jibril, was brutally attacked and killed by hoodlums following an arrest at Shuwarin Market in Kiyawa Local Government Area.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred when the officer, who was attached to the Intelligence Department, successfully apprehended a suspected criminal at the market. Following the arrest, associates of the suspect reportedly mobilized and attacked the officer with sticks and cutlasses, inflicting fatal injuries.

NSCDC spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, confirmed the incident in an official statement. "Today, Monday, 4th August 2025, at approximately 1300hrs, our officer, one SC Bashir Adamu Jibril, was performing his lawful duty around Shuwarin Market in Kiyawa Local Government Area when he was brutally attacked and killed," the statement read.

The spokesperson further explained that the mob, armed with cutlasses, sticks, and other locally fabricated dangerous weapons, descended on the officer after he had arrested a criminal suspect. The attack resulted in grievous injuries that led to his instant death. Despite being quickly transported to the Dutse General Hospital, medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

In a positive development, ASC Badruddeen revealed that the prime suspect and mastermind of the mob attack has been apprehended by the Corps. Investigations are currently ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects involved in the attack.

The NSCDC Command strongly condemned what it described as a "senseless act of jungle justice" meted out to the officer in the line of duty. The Command has assured both the general public and the family of the deceased that justice would be pursued to its logical conclusion, with no effort spared in ensuring that all those involved in the heinous crime are brought to book.

This incident highlights the growing concern over mob action in Nigeria, where individuals take the law into their own hands rather than allowing due process to take its course. Security experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of such actions, which not only undermine the rule of law but also put the lives of security personnel at risk as they carry out their lawful duties.

The killing of SC Bashir Adamu Jibril adds to a troubling pattern of attacks on security personnel in various parts of the country, raising questions about the safety of those tasked with maintaining law and order.
