Residents of Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area in Edo State, have reportedly raised N70 million as ransom for the release of three abducted community members, following a distressing video released by the kidnappers.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the community fundraising effort was initiated after a viral video showing the victims pleading for help circulated widely. The initiative was primarily spearheaded by the victims' age group, whose members have been going door-to-door throughout the community to gather the required ransom amount.
In a cruel twist of fate, the three victims were reportedly kidnapped after delivering approximately N30 million as ransom for another abducted family member over a month ago. One of the victims has been identified as Lukman, while the identities of the other two remain undisclosed.
The source further alleged that over 15 members of the Auchi community, reportedly kidnapped last month, remain in captivity, highlighting the severity of the security situation in the area.
The disturbing video showed the victims making desperate pleas to relatives and public-spirited individuals to help complete the ransom payment to secure their freedom. One of the suspected kidnappers, whose face was not visible, was seen displaying a human skull in what appears to be an intimidation tactic while the victims continued begging for assistance.
According to information gathered, the kidnappers had initially demanded N70 million for the release of the first victim but later reduced it to N30 million. After this sum was delivered by the three individuals who have now themselves been abducted, the kidnappers are allegedly demanding the balance of N70 million for their release.
At the time of this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to confirm the incident or comment on the situation, raising concerns about the response of security agencies to the kidnapping crisis in the region.
This incident adds to the growing concern about insecurity in Edo State, where kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly common, putting significant financial and emotional strain on affected communities.
