Former Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has firmly responded to suggestions that he requires psychiatric evaluation for pledging to serve just one term as president if elected.
The controversy began when Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo stated at a recent rally that any politician promising to serve just one term needs psychiatric evaluation. This came shortly after activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju claimed that even if Obi swore in a shrine to serve one term, Nigerians would not vote for him.
In a statement released through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) and signed by Ibrahim Umar, Obi addressed these remarks directly.
"Recently, I became aware of two statements aimed, albeit indirectly, at my vow to serve only a single four-year term," Obi stated. "One person remarked that even if I swore by a shrine, I still wouldn't be believed. Another suggested that anyone talking about doing only one term should undergo a psychiatric evaluation."
Defending his integrity, Obi emphasized, "In my political life, my word is my bond. I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation. I did not swear by a shrine, nor have I been certified mentally unstable as a result of honouring my word."
The former presidential candidate questioned the logic behind such criticisms, adding, "If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which clearly stipulates a four-year renewable tenure."
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Nigeria from a consumer-based economy to one driven by production, agriculture, technology, and manufacturing if given the opportunity to lead.
The exchange highlights growing tensions among political figures as Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve, with Obi maintaining his position as a significant voice in national politics despite previous electoral setbacks.
