Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called on President Bola Tinubu to take concrete actions in addressing Nigeria's widespread poverty instead of simply urging state governors to do more.
In a statement released on Sunday, Falana responded to the President's recent comments at a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) governors, where Tinubu acknowledged the harsh economic realities Nigerians face due to neoliberal policies.
During the meeting, President Tinubu reportedly told governors, "To you, the governors, you must wet the grass more and deliver progressive change to Nigerians. May God bless our democracy and grant us more fertile lands."
Falana emphasized that Nigerians continue to struggle at the grassroots level and urged the Federal Government to move beyond rhetoric to demonstrate leadership through fully funded welfare programs.
"Instead of begging state governments to 'wet ground more', President Bola Tinubu is urged to ensure that the National Social Investment Programme Agency Act is adopted and enacted into law by the 36 state governments," Falana stated.
The senior lawyer further suggested that rather than allocating billions for state house renovations, governments at all levels should prioritize implementing impactful social policies that would alleviate suffering among the masses.
Falana's comments come amid growing concerns about the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians, with calls for more decisive action from the federal government to address poverty and improve social welfare programs.
The human rights lawyer has consistently advocated for better governance and accountability from Nigerian leaders, particularly regarding policies that directly impact the welfare of citizens.
