The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the recent renaming of streets in various local government areas of the state, describing the action as divisive and against the spirit of unity in diversity.

In a statement released on Thursday in Lagos, PDP Vice-Chairman for Lagos Central, Mr. Hakeem Olalemi, urged the ruling party to reconsider its decision, alleging that the renaming exercise specifically targeted streets bearing Igbo names.

"The Lagos PDP is hereby rejecting in totality the renaming of streets by some council chairmen. We should never erase history because of politics," Olalemi stated.

"It is against the spirit of unity in diversity and it will certainly affect the image of the state as a cosmopolitan state. We should be seen to be promoting unity and not to give the wrong impression to non-indigenes in the state," he added.

Olalemi emphasized that various ethnic groups have contributed significantly to Lagos State's development, which was why certain streets were initially named after them. He described the renaming exercise as "totally unconstitutional" and suggested that the decision reflected a failure by local leaders to consult widely with affected communities.

The controversy has sparked public debate and protests across the state. Notably, residents of Ilaje community in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) staged a demonstration on Wednesday, rejecting the renaming of 'Ilaje Road' to 'King Sunny Ade Road.'

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, has also condemned the street renaming exercise, describing it as unconstitutional.

The renaming initiative has raised concerns about social cohesion in Lagos, with critics arguing that it undermines the state's reputation as a melting pot of diverse cultures and ethnicities.

As this situation continues to develop, many residents are calling for greater transparency and community involvement in decisions that affect historical and cultural landmarks in the state.
