A leadership crisis has erupted in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oju and Obi Local Government Areas of Benue State, with founding members rejecting the newly installed leadership structure.
Local stakeholders in the party have alleged an unfair attempt by the new leadership to sideline the founding members amid ongoing coalition and restructuring efforts within the party.
Dr. Jonah Ominyi Ogah, the ADC Chairman for Benue South Senatorial District and the party's House of Representatives candidate for the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections, has expressed strong concerns about recent developments in the party.
Speaking at an event in Benue State, Ogah criticized the approach taken by the coalition that recently assumed control of the party. "Now that the coalition is here, we expect that the party should also co-opt the founding members in Oju/Obi and not just move in to take over their structure if they mean well," he stated.
He further warned that "anything short of this arrangement is party-grabbing, and it will not mean well for the ADC people."
Political analysts suggest that this internal wrangling could severely impact the party's credibility and grassroots support base if not swiftly addressed, potentially weakening the party's position ahead of future electoral contests in the region.
The crisis comes at a critical time when the ADC has been working to strengthen its position through coalitions with other political interests, raising questions about the party's internal cohesion and organizational structure at the local government level.
BenriNews has reached out to representatives of the new leadership for their response to these allegations but has not received comments as of the time of this report.
