Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu's administration over the deplorable condition of federal roads in Ekiti State and the refusal to refund billions of naira spent by the state on federal road projects.

Speaking during a meeting with his political loyalists in Ekiti, Fayemi expressed the frustration of residents regarding the terrible state of federal highways across the state, particularly highlighting the Omuo-Ilasha-Ayedun-Oye route as being in a disastrous condition.

"Except we are deceiving ourselves, the people are not happy with the Federal Government due to hunger and lack of money," Fayemi stated. "If you look at all the roads, especially federal roads, if you are coming from Omuo – Ilasha – Ayedun – Oye, you know what your eyes will see."

The former governor revealed that his administration had spent between 18 to 20 billion naira on federal road construction, but the current federal government has shown no interest in reimbursing the state for these expenditures.

"When we did the road that BAO just finished, we almost spent 18 to 20 billion on that road but the Federal Government was unconcerned and can't refund the money spent," Fayemi explained.

He further lamented that if the federal government had refunded the money, the current Ekiti governor would have been able to extend the Iyin-Ekiti road to Aramoko as part of a second phase of development. Instead, according to Fayemi, the federal government simply dismissed the state's claims, saying, "it's our road so leave it."

Political observers note that the meeting where Fayemi made these remarks appears to be part of his efforts to test political waters, possibly aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Sources close to the situation suggest Fayemi may be positioning himself as part of an opposition coalition aiming to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The confrontation highlights growing tensions between state governments and the federal administration over infrastructure funding and maintenance responsibilities, particularly as economic challenges continue to affect Nigerians nationwide.
