The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially confirmed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, is not currently a card-carrying member of their party despite being part of their coalition.

ADC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this clarification during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday night, addressing growing speculation about Obi's political affiliations ahead of the 2027 elections.

"Peter Obi has been part of the coalition from day one. He has attended almost every meeting of the coalition," Abdullahi stated during the interview.

The spokesman explained the reason behind Obi's current status, saying: "The reason Peter Obi has not come into the ADC as a card-carrying member is because he asked for leave to allow him complete the election that his people were involved in Labour Party."

According to Abdullahi, this arrangement is not unique to Obi. "The same thing applies to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. And they were both allowed by the leadership to complete the election processes that they started in their respective parties," he added.

The ADC spokesman summarized Obi's current relationship with the party by stating: "Peter Obi is a member of the coalition, but not a card-carrying member of the ADC."

This clarification comes amid increasing political realignments as Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve in preparation for the 2027 general elections. Political analysts suggest these coalition movements could significantly reshape the country's traditional party structures.
