Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has identified Peter Obi's massive following and youth appeal as potential obstacles to Atiku Abubakar's presidential ambitions in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Thursday, El-Rufai acknowledged Atiku as "a force to be reckoned with" in Nigerian politics, noting that the former Vice President believes the political climate now favors his presidential bid.
"Atiku is a force to be reckoned with. He also feels the stars have finally aligned in his favor. And although 2019 is thought to had been his best shot, this may be one of those 'moment meets the man'," El-Rufai stated.
However, El-Rufai emphasized that Peter Obi's growing influence, particularly among younger Nigerians, presents a significant challenge to Atiku's presidential aspirations.
"The sheer force of Obi's numbers and cult-like followership brings a challenge. His appeal across the youth and this younger generation is one profound aspect of his leverage," he explained.
El-Rufai further suggested that a strategic alliance could significantly boost Obi's chances in the 2027 presidential race, stating: "Obi as a flag bearer with a strong Northern candidate would defeat Pablo on Election Day before our dear mother of the Nation, Aunty Remi finishes his breakfast around 12 noon."
This assessment comes amid rumors of Peter Obi potentially moving to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has reportedly caused unease within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). While the ADC has clarified that Obi is not currently a card-carrying member of their party, political analysts continue to speculate about potential realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The 2027 presidential race is gradually taking shape as various political figures position themselves for what promises to be a highly competitive electoral contest.
