The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command, has arrested five suspects involved in illegal mining operations in Minna, the state capital.
According to reports, the joint operation led to the apprehension of four alleged illegal miners and one suspected dealer. The arrests took place at mining sites around the 3 Arm Zone along the Western Bypass and at Caterigwari Mechanic Village in Minna.
Dibie Maureen, Information Officer of the Ministry for Mineral Resources, confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on unregulated mining activities across the state.
"The government is determined to curb illegal mining and protect the state's mineral resources from exploitation by unlicensed operators," Maureen said.
This recent crackdown follows a pattern of increasing enforcement against unauthorized mining in Niger State. Earlier operations have resulted in dozens of arrests as authorities intensify efforts to regulate the mining sector and ensure compliance with federal and state mining regulations.
Illegal mining has been a growing concern in several Nigerian states, with authorities highlighting environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and security challenges as major consequences of these unregulated activities.
The NSCDC and other security agencies continue to monitor known mining sites as part of a coordinated effort to bring the sector under proper regulation and ensure that mining activities contribute positively to the state's economy.
